Just over three miles up the hill from Chesters — in a more exposed position, yet within easy walking distance of its car-park — Brocolitia is still relatively under-developed, and therefore offers an interesting alternative to some of the better known, archaeologically excavated sites on Hadrian’s Wall. It has recently been gifted to English Heritage by its former owners, so changes may be imminent. Meanwhile, for a more mystical experience, stroll down to the nearby Temple of Mithras, beside the spring — ideally at sunset.
Being on the ‘Military Road’, you can get to Brocolitia in the summer months using the AD122 bus. Alternatively, Go Hadrian’s Wall have a range of vehicles, and provide flexible travel for any number of people, up to and including groups of 20 or more.
